Radon in a new home tight construction can hold the gas in

· 1 min· Gaz Radon

A new house can have a pipe and a membrane planned when the slab was poured. That is a preparation. Until someone has measured the air in the rooms where you sleep, nobody knows whether you are under 200 Bq/m³.

What the code does

Quebec’s construction code made it mandatory, for the new buildings it covers, to leave a duct that can later pull gas from under the slab. The note on the code and the rough-in describe that site step. It happens before the slab hides the network.

The warranty and the test

The new-home warranty in Quebec is administered under the GCR. Read your contract to see what is covered. In parallel, measure after you move in, during a winter when the house is closed. A high result can be corrected. A pipe already in place can shorten the work. It does not replace it.

The 4-day test gives a first reading. The 91-day test covers the three-month minimum Health Canada asks for. Both are $59 before tax: shipping, return and the laboratory are included, taxes extra. The PDF report is sent within 2 business days after the laboratory receives the detector.

Above 200 Bq/m³, mitigation is confirmed with a quote. Gaz Radon is C-NRPP certified for measurement and mitigation.
