Sumps and radon an open cover is a path, not a test location

· 1 min· Gaz Radon

The sump goes under the slab, where the gas moves through the gravel. Without a sealed cover, the house draws that air in whenever the draft is negative. A cover with a gasket, and a pass-through for the pump, closes that path. It does not treat the rest of the slab.

Do not measure inside the sump. Health Canada says so: the level there is higher and does not describe the bedroom. The detector stays in the occupied room. If a mitigation system starts from the sump, that is a suction point chosen by the installer, with a tight cover and a pipe to the roof, not the sump pump’s own fan.

Where not to measure. Cracks.

Reference points: Health Canada, what you need to know about radon and the 200 Bq/m³ guideline. The two-year timeline between 200 and 600, and one year above 600, comes from Health Canada’s guide for radon measurements in homes.

The 4-day test gives a first reading. The 91-day test covers the three-month minimum Health Canada asks for. Both are $59 before tax: shipping, return and the laboratory are included, taxes extra. The PDF report is sent within 2 business days after the laboratory receives the detector.

Above 200 Bq/m³, mitigation is confirmed with a quote. Gaz Radon is C-NRPP certified for measurement and mitigation.
