Connecting a radon rough-in the cap means it is not working yet
In a recent house, a pipe labelled radon often rises from the garage floor or a closet and stops, capped. That is the rough-in: gravel under the slab, a membrane, and the start of a duct. While the cap is on, radon enters the house as if the pipe were not there.
Activating it means connecting a fan, continuing the exhaust above the roof, away from windows, and checking on a manometer that there is suction. The electrical connection and the roof penetration follow the code, done by someone who installs these systems. Only then does a 91-day test say whether the bedroom is under 200. What the builder leaves. The first winter.
Reference points: Health Canada, what you need to know about radon and the 200 Bq/m³ guideline. The two-year timeline between 200 and 600, and one year above 600, comes from Health Canada’s guide for radon measurements in homes.
The 4-day test gives a first reading. The 91-day test covers the three-month minimum Health Canada asks for. Both are $59 before tax: shipping, return and the laboratory are included, taxes extra. The PDF report is sent within 2 business days after the laboratory receives the detector.
Above 200 Bq/m³, mitigation is confirmed with a quote. Gaz Radon is C-NRPP certified for measurement and mitigation.
