Where to place a radon detector

The result describes the room where the device spent its days. A shelf above the fridge, or a basement table beside the furnace, does not describe the air you breathe at night.

The room

  • The lowest occupied room: bedroom, office, family room.
  • If the basement is not lived in, the floor where people sleep.
  • Not the kitchen, the bathroom, or a closed closet.
  • Not beside a window, a door that is often open, a radiator, or a supply vent.

Height and duration

Between 0.8 m and 2 m from the floor. Open the detector at the start, note the date and time, and leave it for 4 days or 91 days without moving it. The sheet in the kit and the video sent at delivery repeat those steps. The full instructions.

The 4-day test gives a first reading. The 91-day test covers the three-month minimum Health Canada asks for. Both are $59 before tax: shipping, return and the laboratory are included, taxes extra. The PDF report is sent within 2 business days after the laboratory receives the detector.

Above 200 Bq/m³, mitigation is confirmed with a quote. Gaz Radon is C-NRPP certified for measurement and mitigation.
