Radon in Thunder Bay 12% of 108 homes in the 2012 sample

· 1 min· Gaz Radon

The Thunder Bay District health unit was 12.0% of 108 homes above 200 Bq/m³, with 0.9% above 600. Toronto was 2.7% of 73. Ontario’s population-weighted estimate was 4.6% because the big southern cities weigh so much.

A long heating season means more hours with the house closed. The district line is not a house on Algoma Street.

What the percentage does not measure

The survey describes homes recruited in a health region, not one address. The slab, the sump and how long the windows stay shut change the number next door. The reading that matters is the lowest lived-in room during the heating season.

If the report is over 200

Health Canada’s measurement guide says act within two years between 200 and 600 Bq/m³, and within one year above 600. Above 200. Ontario Sudbury

The 4-day test is a first reading. The 91-day test covers the three-month minimum Health Canada asks for. Both are $59 before tax. Shipping, the return and the lab are included. Tax is extra. The PDF report goes out within 2 business days after the lab receives the detector.

Above 200 Bq/m³, mitigation starts with a quote. Gaz Radon is C-NRPP certified and ships kits across Canada. See the Canada test page.
