How radon mitigation works in a house

· 1 min· Gaz Radon

The house is warmer than the ground, so it pulls soil gas through the slab, cracks, a sump, and pipe penetrations. Mitigation reverses that pull under the floor and gives the gas a pipe to the outdoors.

What you are buying

A suction point in the slab, sealed pipe, a fan that stays on, and a discharge point above the roof so the gas does not re-enter a window. Sealing cracks helps the fan. Sealing alone rarely brings a high house under 200 Bq/m³.

What it is not

Not a purifier in the living room, and not a reason to leave windows open all winter. An HRV can dilute a little. It does not replace the fan under the slab when the report is over the guideline.

The 4-day test is a first reading. The 91-day test is the length Health Canada uses to judge a full heating season. Both are $59 before tax. Shipping, the prepaid return, and the lab are included. Tax is extra. The PDF report is emailed within 2 business days after the lab receives the detector.

Above 200 Bq/m³, the fix is a fan that pulls soil gas from under the slab and exhausts it above the roof. Radon Gas is C-NRPP certified for testing and for mitigation, and ships kits across Canada. Start from the Canada test page.
