Where to place a radon test in the house

· 1 min· Gaz Radon

A detector on top of the fridge, or beside the furnace, does not describe the air you breathe at night.

The room

  • Lowest room people use: bedroom, office, family room.
  • If the basement is only storage, test the lowest floor where someone sleeps.
  • Not the kitchen, bathroom, or a closed closet.
  • Away from windows, exterior doors, heat registers, and the HRV outlet.

Height and time

Between 0.8 m and 2 m off the floor. Open it at the start, write the date and time, and leave it for 4 days or 91 days. Do not move it. The sheet in the kit repeats these steps. Which length to choose.

The 4-day test is a first reading. The 91-day test is the length Health Canada uses to judge a full heating season. Both are $59 before tax. Shipping, the prepaid return, and the lab are included. Tax is extra. The PDF report is emailed within 2 business days after the lab receives the detector.

Above 200 Bq/m³, the fix is a fan that pulls soil gas from under the slab and exhausts it above the roof. Radon Gas is C-NRPP certified for testing and for mitigation, and ships kits across Canada. Start from the Canada test page.
