Energy retrofits can raise radon

· 1 min· Gaz Radon

Radon comes from the soil. It leaves through air leaks and ventilation. A renovation that seals doors, replaces windows and insulates the basement cuts those exits. The same soil can then produce a higher indoor number. The caulk did not invent the gas. The house stopped letting it go.

Health Canada asks for a test of at least three months after substantial changes, during the heating season. An HRV added for air quality may dilute radon. It does not pull it from under the slab. HRV. When to retest.

The 4-day test is a first reading. The 91-day test covers the minimum of three months Health Canada asks for. Both are $59 before tax. Shipping, the prepaid return and the lab are included. Tax is extra. The PDF report goes out within 2 business days after the lab receives the detector.

Above 200 Bq/m³, mitigation starts with a quote. Gaz Radon is C-NRPP certified for testing and for installation, and ships kits across Canada.
